Bai Zhu
(Atractyloides macrocephala)
Recognisable by its lanceolate leaves and small flowers with purple hues, Bai Zhu is a coveted plant. Its rhizome, with a bitter-sweet flavour, is harvested in late autumn for its tonic and immunostimulating properties by practitioners of traditional Chinese medicine.
The balance between Yin, cold and passive force and Yang, active and hot force, is at the heart of this practice.
Bai Zhu, warm in nature, is used to fight against Yang deficiencies: apiaceae tones and balances the fundamental energy, Qi.
Strengthening the body against stress and external attacks, today Bai Zhu is recognised for its anti-toxin and anti-inflammatory properties.
